Launched in 2018, Muthoot Aashiyana is a CSR initiative by Muthoot Finance that was instigated by
the devastating floods in Kerala in the same year which witnessed thousands of families losing their
homes. Muthoot Finance has allocated a cumulative spend of Rs. 20 cr towards the scheme. The
construction was planned in the worst-hit areas by the floods including Paravoor, Alwaye,
Chengannur, Aranmula, Thiruvalla, Kozhencherry, Kuttanad, Kumarakom, Thodupuzha, Malappuram,
Chellanam, Trichur and Idukki. These houses are rebuilt in the exact location where the beneficiaries
had their homes pre-floods to retain their emotional connect. Currently, Muthoot Finance has
managed to surpass the set number of 200 houses.
Speaking on the Muthoot Aashiyana scheme, Mr. George Alexander Muthoot, MD, Muthoot
Finance, said, “Contributing back to society has always been one of the main ethos that drives our
work throughout The Muthoot Group. We were deeply saddened and heart-broken by the loss
witnessed by people in the 2018 floods in Kerala. A roof over one’s head is the most basic need for a
human being and losing it in a fatal disaster can leave people devastated as everyone tends to have a
deep rooted emotional attachment to their homes. Therefore, despite the multiple geographical
challenges, we wanted to help out the impacted people by rebuilding their homes in the exact same
location. With 200+ homes successfully rebuilt as of today, we plan to scale this project further. We
have organized a get together for all the beneficiaries to celebrate the successful completion of this
program.”
Commenting on this initiative, Shri George Jacob Muthoot, Group Chairman, The Muthoot Group,
said, “The launch of Muthoot Aashiyana initiative was a way for us to provide aid to the flood-
ravaged people in Kerala in 2018. The loss that Kerala had faced was disheartening to witness and it
shook the economy of the entire state. This scheme was a small step taken forward to provide some
relief to the impacted families and further help them to overcome the personal loss they had gone
through. As we embark the completion of constructing 200 houses, we had invited all the
beneficiaries for a small celebration.”
Speaking on this development, Chief Guest- Shri. Jayaram, a celebrated actor of the country said, “I
applaud the initiative launched by Muthoot Finance to help out the victims of the Kerala flood.
Losing one’s home is a loss that is hard to overcome and 2018 was a tough year for the entire state. It
is very heartening to see how companies like Muthoot Finance understand their responsibility
towards society and step up to help out in times of need. I am looking forward to collaborating on
more such initiatives by the company.”
Given the positive impact created by the Muthoot Aashiyana initiative, the company has planned to
scale this project further. The ongoing projects under this are: 14 housing projects in Edavanakkad,
Kochi, 20 housing projects in Rewari, Haryana, and 10 housing projects in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
